Keynote Speakers

Brij Kothari

Brij Kothari is on the faculty of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) and the founder of (non-profit) and (for-profit), both dedicated to literacy and language learning through popular culture, mass media and ICTs.

At IIMA and PlanetRead, he and his team have innovated, researched and implemented Same Language Subtitling (SLS) on television for mass literacy. SLS on Bollywood film songs delivers reading practice to 200 million early-readers in India, prompting Bill Clinton call it "a small change that has a staggering impact on people's lives". BookBox produces animated stories for children, integrated with SLS to deliver reading and language learning in over 30 languages.

Brij is a Schwab Foundation Indian Social Entrepreneur of the Year (2009), an Ashoka Fellow and was a Reuters Digital Vision Fellow at Stanford University. His research publications have primarily focused on literacy, primary education and indigenous knowledge. Brij has a Ph.D. in Education and a Masters in Development Communication from Cornell University, and a Masters in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.

Tarun Vij

Tarun Vij is PATH's country program leader for India. He oversees the strategic, programmatic, and financial operations for a matrix of global and in country programs implemented across PATH's five offices in India. He also represents PATH to state governments, policymakers, the global health community, donors, and media.

Before joining PATH, Mr. Vij served as country director for the American India Foundation, where he helped stabilize and substantially grow operations. Previously, he was the project director of the TCI Foundation's HIV prevention program, which was an implementing partner of the Avahan initiative to reduce the spread of HIV in India. Before his work with nonprofits, Mr. Vij was the managing director of the JMA Group, one of India's largest auto component sales and distribution companies, for 18 years.

Mr. Vij holds an MBA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a bachelor's degree in Engineering from Punjab University, Chandigarh.
